How it works

CHAT does not track an index. Its sub-adviser, Roundhill Financial, picks stocks using its own scoring system. In normal conditions, at least 80% of assets go to what the prospectus calls AI and Technology Companies. These are firms that earn half or more of their revenue from areas such as AI software, cloud infrastructure, AI chips, networking hardware, AI services and semiconductors. The fund can change this 80% rule without a shareholder vote, but it must give holders 60 days' notice.

Each company gets an exposure score with two parts. A transcript score counts AI-related keywords in filings, earnings-call transcripts, presentations and press releases. A sector score sorts companies by how much of their revenue, profit or research spending is expected to come from generative AI. Companies at 50% or more get the top score, 10% to 50% gets a lower score, and under 10% gets the lowest. Stocks are weighted by their score. Each must have a market value of at least $250 million and trade at least $500,000 a day on average.

The result is a portfolio of 25 to 50 stocks of any size. It can include foreign and emerging-market shares and stocks bought in initial public offerings (IPOs). As of July 31, 2026, the fund held 47 companies, with 58% in the US and about 11% in South Korea. Portfolio turnover was 92%, so the managers trade heavily. The fund uses no leverage and held no derivatives.

What it really costs

  • CHAT charges 0.75% a year, versus an average of 0.53% for the similar funds below (8th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $77 in the first year and $930 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
CHAT$77$240$417$930

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

CHAT is a concentrated, actively managed bet on one theme, with large price swings and a short track record, so it fits better as a small add-on than as a foundation.

CHAT launched on May 18, 2023, so it has no record through the 2008, 2020 or 2022 market drops. Its short history has been strong. Even its weakest full calendar year, 2024, was a gain of about 31%. But the ride has been rough. From January 23 to April 8, 2025, the fund fell 31.3%, then recovered by June 6, 2025, about two months later. As of October 27, 2026, its one-year volatility (a measure of how widely it swings) was 42.3%, and it had lost 12.7% over the prior month. Someone forced to sell in a slump could lock in losses. Its trailing yield was 2.07%, paid once a year, but income isn't the fund's aim. In the SEC's standard example, the 0.75% fee costs $77 on $10,000 in the first year. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors wanting a focused AI bet across chips, memory and cloud, with NVIDIA, Alphabet, Broadcom and SK hynix as top holdings as of July 31, 2026.
  • People who can live with sharp drops, such as the 31.3% fall from January to April 2025, and keep the fund a small slice.
  • Investors seeking AI exposure beyond the US, with about 11% in South Korea plus stakes in the Netherlands, Japan, Taiwan and China.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: the 0.75% fee ranks 8th of 9 among similar funds, compared with 0.45% for WTAI and 0.47% for ARTY.
  • Retirees who need steady income: the 2.07% trailing yield is paid only once a year, and income isn't the fund's goal.
  • Anyone wanting a long track record: CHAT launched in May 2023 and has not lived through downturns like 2008, 2020 or 2022.

Questions investors ask

Is CHAT a good investment for retirement?

CHAT is built for growth, not stability, so it usually plays the role of a small add-on rather than a core holding. It owns 25 to 50 AI-related stocks. Its one-year volatility was 42.3% as of October 27, 2026, and it fell 31.3% from January to April 2025. It launched in May 2023, so it has no record through a long bear market. Its 0.75% fee is also above the 0.53% average of similar funds.

What's the difference between CHAT and WTAI?

Both own AI-related stocks and share about 46% of their holdings. The key difference is cost: the WisdomTree Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Fund (WTAI) charges 0.45% a year, compared with 0.75% for CHAT. As of October 27, 2026, both returned 24.9% over one year. Over three years CHAT did better, averaging 48.7% a year against 35.1% for WTAI. Roundhill picks CHAT's stocks using its own AI exposure score.

Does CHAT pay a dividend?

Yes, but only once a year. In the 12 months to October 27, 2026, CHAT paid $1.68 per share, a trailing yield of 2.07%. The fund's goal is long-term growth, not income. Payouts from a growth fund with 92% portfolio turnover can vary from year to year. In a taxable account, these payouts are taxable even if they are reinvested.

What are CHAT's top holdings?

As of July 31, 2026, CHAT's largest holdings were NVIDIA (6.4%), Alphabet (5.9%), Broadcom (4.3%), SK hynix (4.2%), AMD (3.4%), Samsung Electronics (3.3%), Micron (3.2%), Nebius Group (2.9%), Amazon (2.8%) and Microsoft (2.8%). Together the top 10 made up about 39% of the fund, which held 47 companies in all. Chip and memory makers dominate the list.

How has CHAT performed since it launched?

CHAT has gained strongly in its short life, but with big swings. Its prospectus reports a 49.83% return for the year ended December 31, 2025. From its May 2023 launch through that date, it averaged 39.49% a year. Its strongest quarter gained 39.44% (ended June 30, 2025), and its weakest lost 13.77% (ended March 31, 2025). As of October 27, 2026, the fund was up 37.7% for the year to date but down 12.7% over the prior month.
