How it works
BRNY does not track an index. The Burney Company runs a "factor rotation" approach. A factor is a trait, such as company size or how cheap a stock looks, that can help explain returns. Burney has seen that small and value stocks have tended to beat large and growth stocks over the long run, but not in every period. So it studies rolling 36-month return gaps between small and large stocks, and rolling 12-month gaps between growth and value stocks, to judge which style may lead next. That sets the fund's target weights. The fund always keeps some money in each of four groups: large, small, growth and value.
Next, Burney screens out American Depositary Receipts, companies worth less than about $1 billion, and thinly traded stocks. A computer model scores the rest on valuation, growth, profitability, quality and price trends. It also uses monthly signals from an outside research firm. That firm applies machine learning to "digital footprint" data, such as website traffic, app use and social media activity, to estimate whether a company will beat revenue forecasts. A portfolio optimizer then picks highly rated stocks that fit the targets.
The result is concentrated and changes often. As of July 31, 2026, the top 10 of 70 stocks made up 47.7% of assets, led by NVIDIA (7.8%), Expedia (6.3%) and Alphabet (6.0%). The fund held no derivatives.
What it really costs
- BRNY charges 0.79% a year, versus an average of 0.35% for the similar funds below.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $81 in the first year and $978 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BRNY | $81 | $252 | $439 | $978 |
In a retirement portfolio
BRNY is an actively managed, concentrated, high-turnover stock fund with a 0.79% fee and a short history, so it fits better as a smaller add-on than as a foundation.
BRNY launched on October 13, 2022, just after the 2022 bear market hit bottom. That means it has no record through the 2008, 2020 or 2022 downturns. Its deepest drop was 19.2%, from February 18 to April 8, 2025. It recovered by June 24, 2025, about 2.5 months later. Every full calendar year so far has been positive, but that record is short and came mostly in a rising market. Its one-year beta of 1.1 means it has moved slightly more than the market, so someone who had to sell in a slump could lock in losses. Income is minimal: the yield was 0.18% as of October 27, 2026, paid twice a year. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 would cost about $81 in fees over one year and $978 over ten. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want an actively managed U.S. stock fund that rotates between large, small, growth and value stocks instead of holding a fixed mix.
- Those adding a small satellite position next to a low-cost core fund, and willing to pay 0.79% a year for a model-driven approach.
- Investors comfortable with concentration: the top 10 of 70 stocks, led by NVIDIA and Expedia, made up about 48% of assets as of July 31, 2026.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors: BRNY's 0.79% fee is more than double the 0.35% charged by the Astoria US Quality Growth Kings ETF (GQQQ).
- Retirees who need portfolio income: the trailing yield was 0.18% as of October 27, 2026, paid only twice a year.
- Anyone wanting a long track record: the fund launched in October 2022 and has not been through a downturn like 2008 or 2022.

Questions investors ask
Is BRNY good for retirement?
BRNY may fit better as a small, higher-risk satellite position than as a core retirement holding. It charges 0.79% a year and yielded just 0.18% as of October 27, 2026. It launched in October 2022, so it missed the 2008, 2020 and 2022 downturns. Its deepest drop was 19.2% in early 2025, and it recovered in about 2.5 months. Investors who need steady income or a long track record may find other funds worth comparing.
What is the BRNY expense ratio?
BRNY's expense ratio is 0.79%, and all of it is the management fee, according to the prospectus filed November 19, 2025. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would pay about $81 in costs after one year, $252 after three, $439 after five and $978 after ten. That is well above the 0.35% charged by GQQQ, the fund with the most similar holdings. Turnover of 222% can add trading costs on top of that.
Does BRNY pay dividends?
Yes, but very little. BRNY pays distributions semiannually, or twice a year. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.10 per share, a trailing yield of 0.18%. The fund's goal is capital appreciation, not income, and its largest holdings include NVIDIA, Alphabet and Apple. Retirees who rely on portfolio income would need to get most of it from other holdings.
What's the difference between BRNY and GQQQ?
Both are U.S. stock ETFs, and about 33% of their holdings overlap, based on the latest N-PORT reports. BRNY rotates between large, small, growth and value stocks using The Burney Company's models, and charges 0.79%. GQQQ, the Astoria US Quality Growth Kings ETF, charges 0.35%. For the year to October 27, 2026, GQQQ returned 16.7% and BRNY 15.5%. BRNY had about $580 million in net assets as of July 31, 2026. GQQQ had about $163 million as of August 31, 2026.
How has BRNY performed since launch?
BRNY has posted gains in every full calendar year. Its prospectus shows returns of 22.33% in 2023 and 28.71% in 2024, an average of 26.29% a year from launch through December 31, 2024. Based on price, it gained about 22.0% in 2025 and 13.2% in 2026 through October 27. Its three-year annualized return was 28.8% as of that date. These results came mostly in a rising market and may not repeat.
