How it works

AIVI is actively managed, so it does not track an index. WisdomTree is the adviser. Voya Investment Management, the sub-adviser, runs the stock selection. The starting pool is developed-market stocks outside the US and Canada that look like value stocks. That means they trade cheaply compared with book value (what a company's assets are worth on paper) or earnings, produce high free cash flow, or belong to a third-party value index. Companies must also pass size and trading screens, such as a market value of at least $100 million. Under normal conditions, at least 80% of net assets goes into these stocks.

Voya's model reads company financials along with unstructured data such as press releases and news. It looks for patterns in more than 20 years of history. The model is usually updated monthly and picks 60 to 190 stocks. It weights each one by its model score, and no single company can go above 6%. Voya steps in only in limited cases, such as mergers.

Trading every month means high turnover: 99%, per the prospectus. That can add trading costs that aren't counted in the expense ratio. As of June 30, 2026, the fund held 140 stocks, and the 10 largest made up 22.7% of assets. Japan (21.6%), the UK (16.3%) and France (10.9%) were the largest countries. Banks such as United Overseas Bank and Swedbank were among the top positions.

What it really costs

  • AIVI charges 0.58% a year, versus an average of 0.25% for the similar funds below (5th of 5, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $59 in the first year and $726 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

RoleDiversifier

It adds foreign value stocks, especially banks and companies in Japan and Europe, which many US-focused portfolios hold little of.

AIVI could add foreign value stocks and quarterly income to a portfolio built mostly on US companies. According to its prospectus, it lost 10.04% in 2022 and 1.16% in 2020. Its worst quarter was a 25.42% drop in early 2020. Its deepest price decline since 2022 was 28%, from February to October 2022, and it took about nine months to recover, in July 2023. Its 2008 record isn't available. Someone drawing money in a quarter like early 2020 could have had to sell at a much lower price. The 4.97% trailing yield as of October 27, 2026 helps with income, but dividends from foreign stocks can rise and fall with currency moves. Cost is high: in the SEC's $10,000 example, fees come to $59 after one year and $726 after 10. Past results don't predict future results, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors wanting international value stocks with quarterly income; the trailing yield was 4.97% as of October 27, 2026.
  • People comfortable letting Voya's AI model choose 60 to 190 stocks each month instead of following a fixed index.
  • Those adding non-US banks and Japanese, UK and French companies, such as United Overseas Bank and TotalEnergies, to a US-heavy portfolio.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: the 0.58% expense ratio ranks last of five similar funds, and Avantis AVIV charges 0.25%.
  • Anyone wanting a large, heavily traded fund: AIVI had about $58.7 million in net assets as of June 30, 2026, the smallest of its peers.
  • Investors who want broad international stocks: value can lag for years, and AIVI trailed both of its benchmarks over 10 years through 2025.

Questions investors ask

Does AIVI pay dividends?

Yes. AIVI pays dividends every quarter. Over the 12 months through October 27, 2026, it paid $2.88 per share, a trailing yield of 4.97%. The fund's stated goal is both income and capital appreciation, and its holdings lean toward high-dividend sectors such as banks and energy. Payments can change from quarter to quarter, because foreign companies set their own dividends and currency swings change what they are worth in dollars.

What's the difference between AIVI and EFV?

AIVI is actively managed by an AI model, while iShares MSCI EAFE Value ETF (EFV) follows an MSCI value index. EFV shares more holdings with AIVI than the other similar funds do. EFV costs 0.33% a year, compared with AIVI's 0.58%, and had about $29.1 billion in net assets as of July 31, 2026. Returns were close. EFV gained 21.2% over one year and 24.4% a year over three years through October 30, 2026. AIVI gained 21.1% and 23.0% through October 27, 2026.

How does AIVI use artificial intelligence to pick stocks?

AIVI uses a quantitative AI model built by Voya Investment Management to choose stocks. The model studies more than 20 years of company financials, plus news articles and press releases, to find value stocks it expects to beat the broad international market. Each month it picks 60 to 190 stocks, weights them by score and caps any one company at 6%. The prospectus warns that the model may not work as intended.

Is AIVI expensive compared with other international value ETFs?

Yes. AIVI's 0.58% expense ratio is the highest of the five similar funds compared, and the group average is 0.25%. Dimensional International Value ETF (DFIV) charges 0.27%, Avantis International Large Cap Value ETF (AVIV) 0.25% and iShares MSCI Japan Value ETF (EWJV) 0.15%. In the SEC's standard example, a $10,000 investment in AIVI earning 5% a year would cost $59 in the first year and $726 over 10 years.

How did AIVI do in 2020 and 2022?

AIVI lost money in both years, but less than its worst stretches might suggest. According to its prospectus, it returned -1.16% in 2020 and -10.04% in 2022. Within those years the drops were deeper. Its worst quarter was -25.42% in early 2020. Its price fell 28% from February to October 2022 and took about nine months to recover, in July 2023. Its best full year was 2025, with a 38.03% gain.
